Trip to Texas Part I

Our first flight without daddy started off as a disaster. When I got on the plane to sit down in my seat, Karis started screaming and throwing a fit. I didn't know what to do because the other two times we flew, she was fine. I prayed and thankfully the Lord answered my prayer in a another woman who reminded Karis of her grandma. Karis spent the first half of the flight in this wonderful lady's arm taking a nap. She was a God send. My good friend Martha and her husband, Ross, picked us up from the airport in Houston. We ate dinner at Taco Bell and witnessed Karis being hard headed and causing pintos and cheese to catapult on her face. It was a sight! Karis and I arrived at Laura's to spend the night. We let the girls play a while and stayed up late talking. It was so much fun to be with Laura and Ashley.
Sunday we went to church at FBC Beaumont. We saw many of our friends and Karis was excited to see her old teachers.

Karis really enjoyed sitting with Aunt Courtney at Pop Pop and Grammie's house on Sunday afternoon. As you can see, in almost all the pictures Karis is wearing the same outfit. She really does own more clothes than that, but I just really like the outfit! Aunt Courtney took Karis and I to lunch to eat some REAL mexican food. It was good!!:)

Papou, Justin's grandpa, played ball with Karis. She was the center of attention and enjoyed every minute of it.

After dinner, everyone left and Karis decided to watch her new Hermie movie, from Aunt Courtney, sitting on Pop Pop's lap. We spent Sunday night at Pop Pop and Grammie's. Monday, Pop Pop took Karis and I back to Laura's for lunch. My mom and Memaw met us there for lunch and to take us to Magnolia.

Karis and Beth had fun playing on the piano and in the play room. They also enjoyed playing on Karis' old swing set, until Karis decided not to share anymore!

This is not the best picture, but it is all of us girls; Karis, Beth, Sarah Jane, Laura and me. The Lord is good and our visit was sweet. Karis and I were so blessed to be with friends and family.

Trip to Texas Part II

Disclaimer: The pictures were taking so long to load that I had to put part II of our trip first. I was planning on putting all the pictures on the same entry, but my patience was wearing thin. I will do part I tomorrow or Wed. I am still learning this blog thing, so I am sorry to have to do things backwards.

Karis really loves her cousin, Madison. Madi, as Karis calls her, is seven, and I think Karis thinks Madison is an adult. She doesn't mind sharing with her, and she always wants Madi to hold her. We had a great day playing with her and riding the four wheeler.

Madi, Karis, and my dad(Papa John) rode the four wheeler together. I took Karis and Madi on the four wheeler, and Karis had a fun time screaming when I went faster. I let Madi drive some and Karis thought it was funny!

Brooklynn, Madi's sister, and Karis finally playing well together our last day at my parents. Karis has a hard time sharing Papa John and her toys when Brooklynn. They did however have fun chasing each other and hugging for the camera. Brooklynn is doing very well. She got her results from the CAT scan, and the doctor is confident that the cancer is gone. Praise the Lord!

Memaw, my dad's mom, and Karis are doing her very favorite thing, reading books. I think Memaw read each book about 10 times each. She finally said enough, and Karis went on to her next book reading victim, my dad!

The last thing Karis did with my parents was read books. Grandma and Papa John were sad to see her leave, but we will be back to see them in six weeks for Christmas. It was a great visit. I really was sad to go, but I was ready to get home to Justin. Every morning when Karis woke up she would say, "Daddy-O," her name for daddy. When we got off the airplane and headed to baggage claim, I kept telling Karis that we were going to see daddy. Going down the elevator, I could see Justin's shoes. As soon as Karis saw him, she ran and did her backwards hug and kissed him. She was so excited!

Going to Texas

Texas, here we come!

Eight weeks after moving to North Carolina, Karis and I are flying home to Texas to see our family and friends. Justin is going to a church plant boot camp all next week, so we decided it would be a great time for Karis and I to go back home to Texas. I have to keep reminding myself that home is now North Carolina, and I am sure it will feel more like home once we get settled into our house.
I cannot wait to see my mom and dad! I also am very excited about Karis getting to see her Mamou, Papou, Aunt Courtney, Grammie, and PopPop. (Justin's family). Karis and I will fly into Houston on Saturday and be picked up by one of my friends from Beaumont. Martha will take Karis and me to Laura's house where we will spend the night and go to FBC Beaumont on Sunday morning. Sunday after church, Courtney, Justin's sister, will take us to Orange to see his family and spend Sunday night. We will then meet my parents in Beaumont on Monday to eat lunch and head to Magnolia for the rest of the trip. We will fly home on Friday, back to Justin who I am sure we will miss very much. I will have lots of pictures and details of our fun trip. I pray Karis and I will be safe on the plane and that she will obey me in the airport and on the plane.

Beautiful Karis

On Wednesday morning when I was taking a shower, I heard Karis get really quiet for a few minutes. Usually when I am in the shower, she is playing in the bathroom or watching BOZ. I looked out of the shower and didn't see her, so I called her name. A few seconds later she crawled into the bathroom from our room (the room at the Dale's house where Justin and I sleep). When she turned her head towards me, I saw a mark on her head. I immediately told her to stay right there until I finished my shower (so much for shaving my legs, but I did have to rinse my hair). After my shower, Karis and I went into my room to find what she had used to mark on her head. She had unzipped my small makeup bag that I put my lip liner and lipstick in. The mark on her head was from my lip liner. I think she was trying to do what mommy does; however, she got her forehead confused with her lips!! I now know that my daughter is becoming too curious to leave alone while showering. So it begins!

Trip to the Wilson Fair

Karis and I are having a snack before we head to the fair.
(Notice her bow, Aunt Laura will be so proud!)

Karis enjoyed riding the elephants!

Spongebob sure is cute in this picture!

Daddy and Karis are feeding the baby goats.

Karis thought is was funny when the baby goats licked
her hands for the food. She kept holding her hand up
to them even when she was out of food.

In late September, one Friday night, Justin and I took Karis to her first fair. We thought she would be so excited, but she was kind of blah! We let her ride two rides, along with one of us, and she enjoyed them. We also ate corn dogs, fries, and a funnel cake. Karis wasn't very interested in any of our food, thank goodness I brought her some snacks. We went to the petting zoo, and she feed the animals. It was an all around fun trip, except when Mommy rode a ride by herself. Karis cried for me until the ride started and then she got to see Mommy spin around and around! Justin was glad he got to stay with Karis!

WMitLC Chapter 3: The Motive

"Every Christian would have his church enclosed within his heart, and be affected with its maladies, as it they were his own, -sympathize with its sorrows, and bewail its sins.
-John Calvin
Do we really feel that way about our church? Do we hurt when other members of your church body hurt? Do we grieve over the sin in others lives? Good questions to ponder this week. I would love some feed back!
A women's ministry is important because its displays God's glory in the local church.
Our ultimate motivation behind any service to God must be to glory if Him in the grace that He provides because "the very people we are called to serve will break our hearts." We must soley serve in ministry because of Christ's love and not rely on our love for people or we will burn out.
Christ gives us the ability to love others, we cannot muster this up ourselves.
The letter to Timothy from Paul is used to explain how we should serve in the local church.
1 Timothy 3:14-16
I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God; a pillar and buttress of truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness; he was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Three truths from the passage:
1. The Bible-
a. it is have a controlling influence in our lives and our ministry in the local church
b. we should encourage our ministers to be true to Scripture, even to the hard areas
c. we should use it as our guide for ministry
2. The Church-
a. "the household of God"- glorious people that God has offered His grace
b. "church of the living God"- He is present with us when we meet together
c. "a pillar and buttress of truth" - we, as the local church, must influence culture, we do not need to become like the culture to reach others for Christ
3. Christ-
a. we are to be gracious, truth-loving, Christ-loving, distinct disciples growing in God's grace
b. we are to share the gospel with the lost and disciple and grow the saved

"Falling in love with Christ means falling in love with His church."
This last quote really hits the mark. If we are not in love with the local church, then maybe we really aren't in love with Christ! Ponder that for awhile and tell me what you think.

We Bought a House!

Praise the Lord, we finally bought a house. The Lord is so gracious to us. The house we bought is actually the first house we looked at when we first moved here. God obviously didn't want us to like it then, but we do now. There are only a few changes, painting and other things we will have to do. After all this is complete, I will post pictures so you can see our new home. It is bigger and much more than we could have hoped for, and I am so thankful, IT DOES HAVE A TUB IN EACH BATHROOM. The only thing that will be hard to get used to is the size of the bathrooms. Compared to our former bathroom, it is probably only 1/3 the size. I can't complain because at least there is a tub!!:)
It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath with a formal living room and formal dining room. The kitchen and den are connected, and there is what is called a bonus room. It is a big room that was added on that has a window unit that does air and heat. We are extremely excited, and I can't wait to see how the Lord is going to use our house to minister to my family, our church family, and the community. Thanks for all your prayers.
I can't wait until we are in our home and I can post pictures more often.

7 Year Anniversary!!

On October 2, Justin and I celebrated our 7th anniversary. I sometimes have a hard time remembering what life was like without him. He is my best friend, my spiritual leader, an outstanding father, and most of all, a man who desires Christ above all things. I am so blessed to be married to him. I was trying to think of a way to tell explain how much he means to me, so I thought I would share our love story briefly with you.
In 1998, Justin and I met at FOCUS, a weekend college retreat in Texas. We were both attending Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. We later realized that we had Spanish class together. I started tutoring Justin in Spanish and we spent time together at the BSM sharing Jesus with others on campus. After spending a few weeks with Justin and listening to his heart for Jesus and the lost, I remember going home and telling my mom that I met the kind of man I wanted to marry. Since junior high, I had always known I was going to marry a minister. We continued to study Spanish and teach his youth kids about Christ. Over the Christmas break, we both realized that God had put us together for a reason and that no matter how hard we tried to fight it, we really liked each other.
In Feb. of 1999, Justin told me that he loved me, and in April he asked me to marry him. On October 2, 1999 I kissed my husband for the first time and became Mrs. Justin Childers. Our first few years were rough, but God is faithful and I honestly fall more in love with my husband everyday.
Justin, thank you for always pointing me to Christ. Thank you for always reminding me that Christ is the only one that can complete me. I love you Justin and can't wait to see what the next 7 years holds for us.
"Glorify the Lord with me, let us exalt His name together." Psalm 34:3

Our House Is Sold!!

Thank you all for praying for God to sell our house. It is sold! Praise the Lord, He is so faithful! We should be receiving the check in the next few days. We are still hunting for a home here. There is a home that we are going to look at for the second time tomorrow. It is a very good deal for us, so we just pray that God will give us wisdom! Thanks again for all your prayers!

WMitLC Chapter 2: The Need

I hope you can understand the title of this post, as I will be referring to my book review as WMitLC as the book title, Women's Ministry in the Local Church.
Chapter 2: The Need
"The church is a bride being prepared for the approach of her lover and husband."
Wow, what a profound quote! Do we really believe this? Sometimes I wonder if we do. We, the church, are Christ's bride, and we should be eagerly awaiting His return. What does this look like? I think that this chapter shows us a glimpse of what this looks like in the need of a women's ministry.
I. Covenantal and Complementarian
a. The covenant of grace defines our relationship with God and one another.
b. We are to be a complementarian- acknowledge that God created men and women equal in being but assigned them different, but equally valuable, functions in His kingdom order.
WE ARE EQUALS BEFORE THE CROSS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, IN OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, BUT HE HAS GIVEN US CERTAIN FUNCTIONS AND ROLES THAT ARE DIFFERENT FOR A MAN AND A WOMAN.

5 reasons a church needs a women's ministry:
1. We need to cultivate godly, feminine, Christian women. The word feminine here was difficult for me at first because I am not what someone would call a "girlie, girl." I think that many times especially for myself, I have a clouded view of what a word means because of how our society views the word. God has called us as women to be proud of our femininity, but to understand our place in His higher kingdom calling.
2. We need to promote healthy, Christian marriages. In other words, marriages should reflect our joyful submission to our husbands. It is not a burden or hindrance to submit to our husbands, it is a command of God. This command is to be done with joy because when we do not submit joyfully to our husbands, we are disobeying God.
3. We need, more specifically, to promote godly, monogamous, heterosexual marriages.
4. We need to cultivate among our Christian women a joyous embrace of godly, healthy, Christian, male spiritual leadership in the church. This goes back to number 2.
5. We need to help Christian women appreciate the many areas of service that are open to them in the church and equip them distinctively as women to fulfill their ministry.

There are also five reasons why women's ministry is important, but I think the five above sum up the chapter well.
Two really good quotes from the end of the chapter. Tell me what you think.

"The church has been called to shape culture, not ape it."

"He, God, did not give His benediction of "It is very good" until man and woman stood side by side, equal but different."

Here is a picture of the book I am reviewing for you. I know that sometimes seeing what a book looks like helps me find it if I want to buy it. Obviously, you cannot look inside it, so ignore the "search inside." It is the only picture I could find. Chapter 2 will be coming soon. Karis decided not to take a nap today, so no time to write.

Book Review Chapter 1

Women's Ministry in the Local Church
by J. Ligon Duncan & Susan Hunt

Before I moved from Beaumont my friend, Ashley Benson, and I were reading this book together. I am just now finishing it, and I feel it is very worthy of your time. This book has encouraged me and helped me see God's pure plan for women in ministry and why it is so vital for every local church.
Chapter 1
"In the whole world there is nothing enduring but the CHURCH.." John Calvin

What a true and powerful statement. How much we should love the local church because it is enduring. Chapter 1 is really just an introduction of how the book came to be. This chapter gives both Duncan and Hunt an opportunity to share why they felt that God wanted them to write this book. I am so glad to see that Hunt wanted to write this book with an elder, Duncan, and show how important and vital male leadership is even in women's ministry.
Ten Affirmations are listed from The Danvers Statement of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood
1. Both Adam and Eve were created by God in His image, equal before God as persons and distinct in their manhood and womanhood.
2. Distictions in masculine and feminine roles are ordained by God as part of the created order...
3. Adam's headship in marriage was established by God before the Fall, and was not a result of sin
4. The Fall introduced distortions into the relationships between men and women.
5. The OT and the NT show the equally high value and dignity which God attached to the roles of both men and women.
6. Redemption in Christ aims at removing the distortions intorduced by the curse.
7. in all of life Christ is the supreme authority and guide for men and women so that no earthy submission causes us to sin.
8. In both men and women a call to ministry should never be used to set aside biblical doctrine.
9. no man or woman who feels a passion for God to make His grace known in all the world should ever live without fulfilling their ministry for the glory of Christ.
10. We are convinced that a denial of these rinciples will lead to increasingly destructive consequences in our families, our churches, and the culture at large.

These ten affirmations are so true especially the last one. We can see in our culture today how neglecting God's call of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood has caused pain and misunderstanding in our world. Even as a girl growing up in the church, I wasn't taught the true reason I was to submit to male headship. I really thought it was because of the fall, not that God had ordained it from the beginning.
The next chapter deals withe the Need of explaining Biblical Womanhood.

Commissioning Service, First two Sundays at CBCW

Open Door Baptist Church commissioning service, Sept. 10.

Pastor Dwayne, Tim Dale, Carol Dale, Justin, Me

Karis doing her favorite thing at the Potluck lunch after our commissioning service.

Just a cute picture of Karis in Tim and Carol's back yard!

I realized today that I haven't written on my blog in a long time. I just figured out how to put pictures on my blog without having to use Justin's computer. On September 10, Open Door Baptist Church (our sponsoring church) did a commissioning service for our church here in Wilson. It was very moving, and we were very encouraged by the memebers of their church. They also had a pot luck lunch for us after the service, that is where Karis is feeding her face like usual!
Our first service was held on my mom's birthday, Sept. 17. The Lord blessed us with 44 people. What a joy it was to be with His people and worship with them! Everything with the nursery went well, and we had two visiting children. Karis wasn't alone in the nursery.
Today was our second service and again the Lord exceded our expectation of people. We had close to the same amount as last week. We also had a couple, Wes and Angey, come from Open Door and lead worship for us. They did a fantastic job leading us in song. Justin is starting the book of Ephesians. He would pick a book about predestination as the first book to do a series on. Ephesians is such a vital book about the church. He reminded us that everything including predestination God does for His glory. Praise the Lord that He does save us through Jesus for His glory!
Our house in Beaumont is officially sold as of yesterday. Praise the Lord! We are still looking here and need your prayers. Thank you for all your prayers, we really appreciate them.

Birthday and House Hunting

I am starting to feel the emotion moving far away from family. My birthday is tomorrow and my mom's birthday is Sunday. This will only be the third time that my mom and I have not gotten together on our around our birthdays. Birthdays are big in my family. This year is really hard for me to not be with my mom because she is turning 60. Mom, you are so special to me and I love you very much. Thank you for being my best friend and loving me no matter what. Thank you for encouraging me in my walk with the Lord and for always wanting Justin and I to go where God leads. I miss you so much.
Karis woke up with fever this morning so Carol and I went to look at houses, and Justin stayed home with Karis. I was disappointed. It seems that all the houses that are in our price range don't have a bath tub in the master bath or a laundry room. We are also having a hard time finding something that has enough space. The houses here are less square foot for the price. I am going to have to compromise on something, I just don't know what yet. Please continue to pray for us. I am getting weary, but I know that God has a house out there for us. I'm sure in posts to come I will be able to tell you what He is teaching me.

First Service and House Hunting

We will be having our first service on Sunday September 17. It will be more of a get together than a full blown service. We will be doing lots of prayer, and Justin will share a message from God's Word. Praise the Lord! I am so excited about being feed and Justin being able to use his God-given gift of preaching. I am in charge of getting everything ready for the nursery. Since at this moment, I am the only one who has a vested interest because Karis is really the only child. I know now why God had me working at Mother's Day Out at FBC Beaumont, I needed to learn the skills to be able to run a nursery well. Thank you FBC! Please continue to pray for us as we start this great adventure of church.
We did get an offer on our house this last week. Praise the Lord again! It is a good one, and the Lord continues to show us His leading and His will by "meeting all our needs." We are still looking at houses here. I just haven't found "it." I keep telling Justin I will know when we have found the right one. For some reason I just feel like God is still telling us to wait, the right house is out there. Thank goodness that the Dales aren't getting tired of us yet! :)
God has shown me His goodness and His everlasting comfort this week. Last week on Thursday I had a small melt down. Karis decided not to take a nap, and I didn't get any rest from her. I also didn't have a car and couldn't go anywhere. God gave me strength and I made it through, but it was hard. She is now still havinng a hard time taking naps again. I pray this is only a phase, I am not ready for her to outgrow naps yet.

Labor Day at Emerald Isle

My trusty life jacket that helped save me from the water.

Karis is enjoying her time in the sand.

She is very determined to fill up the pail on her own.

The water is so cool Mom!

We had a wonderful and relaxing time at Emerald Isle with the Dale's and Lisa. Karis really liked the beach and the sand. We played on the beach for about 2 hours and then Karis came home and took a four hour nap. She was exhauseted. She was very carefree in the water, that is why we had to put a life jacket on her. I know one thing for sure, she loves the water. Don't have a lot of time right now because I am writing this in Justin's office.

Daily Life

You will have to forgive me for waiting so long to blog again. I have been busy, and I haven't been able to download the new pictures of Karis yet. I will have some from our weekend at the beach with the Dale's and Lisa. We had a great time of relaxing, and Karis had a wonderful time playing in the sand and water. She is fearless!
Justin's office is slowly getting put together, literally. He is putting together a desk today and his bookshelves tomorrow. He will now be spending more time at the office so it will be like old times with Karis and me all day long, except we are not at our own home. The Dales are wonderful though. We are still trying to sell our home in Beaumont and looking for houses here in Wilson. Please continue to pray that God will give us wisdom in all these decisions.

Planning and Mothering

The last few days have been relaxing. I have been able to sleep a little later. I think my body is still on central time instead of eastern time. I know I will get adjusted soon. We are very blessed to be staying with Tim and Carol Dale. They are taking great care of us, and God is continually using them to help with the planning of our first service, hopefully on September 17. Justin is daily working out all the little details, who knew how much planning it would take to have a church service. I am doing my best to be very supportive of Justin by mostly watching Karis all the time so that he can concentrate on his work. Carol is wonderful and has already babysat so we could go look at houses. Please continue to pray that our house will sell in Beaumont soon. We will go look at a few more houses tomorrow.
God is daily sustaining me in His Word by reminding me of His never-ending peace and grace. I do have times of missing my friends and parents, but since Carol is home most of time, I am blessed to be able to hang out with her. She is very godly and daily encourages me with her testimony.
I read Psalm 29 this morning and verse 11 says, "May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!" What a verse to remind me of how His peace is always on His people no matter their circumstances.

Finally Here and Settled

Here is a small run down of our journey to North Carolina. First, Karis was fantastic. I think she watched Boz one time on Wednesday and about four times on Thursday. I am now detoxing her from Boz in the car.
Wednesday we left much later than anticipated because all our stuff didn't fit in the U-haul Tuesday night. We had to rent a trailer to pull behind the U-haul for the rest of our stuff. We left around 9:30. After lunch and a few more hours of driving, Justin, Karis and me in the Trailblazer and my parents in the U-haul, the brake lights came on in the U-haul. We pulled over and had to call a mechanic to come check out the U-haul. We waited about an hour and a half for him to tell us everything was fine. We finally made it to Montgomery, Alabama about 11:00 on Wednesday night to the Motel 6. We slept, some of us did, I didn't because there was too much snoring in that little hotel room!
We got up and left around 7:00 am on Thursday. Justin, Calvin, and me were in the U-haul, and my parents and Karis in the Trailblazer. We drove for about two hours and then the brake lights came back on in the U-haul. Then, the U-haul started beeping. We pulled over and waited awhile and my parents switched cars with us. Around 4:30, we stopped because the U-haul was beeping again and the keys got locked in the Trailblazer. I was driving and Justin got out to get gas. I left the keys in the ignition and Calvin was in the car, he must have stepped on the door and locked it. We waited there for two hours for the lock smith to come. Needless to say, I was very upset myself and did my best to trust the Lord in all this. My parents and Justin were real troppers. My parents ended up staying in Florence, South Carolina for the night after the two hour set back. Justin, Karis, and I finished the drive and arrived in Wilson, North Carolina around 11:00 pm. My parents got to Wilson on Friday morning about 9:30.
It was a long journey. Praise the Lord we all made it in one piece! I know one thing for sure, Justin and I would still be driving if my dad hadn't come with us. Thank you so much dad for all your help. Thank you that I always know I can count on you. You are the best dad in the world and I love you so much.
We also took my parents to the airport today. It was really hard to see them go, but I don't think the reality of how far away we are from each other has hit yet. I don't think I have ever hugged my mom so hard in my life. I am going to miss her, she is not only my mom but my best friend. Thank goodness for Verizon wireless free mobile to mobile. I love you, Mom!

Challenging Sermon, Encouraging Send Off

Today was officially my last day of packing, we are loading up the Uhaul tomorrow all day and pulling out of Beaumont on Wednesday morning. It really and truly all seems like such a blur, but I know it will hit me soon enough.
We had a great last Sunday at FBC. Justin preached his farewell sermon and really challenged the church to put God's Word first in their lives. The text that he read from was Psalm 19:7-11. It describes six names of God's Word, six characteristics, and six rewards (or things that His Word does for us). God's Word is to be our guide in all that we do in our personal lives, our family, globally, and in the church. Justin kept it real by challenging the men of the church to read, study, and meditate on God's Word as a family. It is the man's responsibility to be the spiritual leader in the home. I am so blessed to have Justin as my husband. He's not perfect, but he does seek God and lead our family towards Him daily.
After church, Justin's family (his dad, sister, sister's boyfriend, grandparents, and aunt and uncle) came over for lunch. Karis is enjoying her lunch next to Mammou. As you can tell, she really likes to eat. After church Sunday night, there was a reception for us. It was really nice and the everyone was so encouraging. We are really going to miss our FBC Beaumont church family, but we know that you guys are going to aide us in our church plant with your prayers and encouragement for years to come. Thank you FBC for all your support and love. We love you guys!
Now I am going to try to go to sleep before we attempt to load all of this stuff in the Uhaul.
